SkeyDrone Releases New Drone Detection Report

Steenokkerzeel, 4 September 2024 – SkeyDrone is proud to announce the release of a new public Drone Detection Report. The report offers a high-level analysis of the drone flights detected at the Belgian coast during the months of July and August 2024, based on SkeyDrone’s Drone Detection network.

The report provides crucial insights into various aspects of drone activity, including the types of drones used, frequency and timing of flights, duration, altitude, distance between drones and pilots, compliance with regulations as well as drone hotspots. It serves as a valuable resource for understanding the evolving drone landscape at the Belgian coast, highlighting both opportunities and challenges for public and private stakeholders.

Key Findings:

  • Daily Flights: An average of 18 drone flights per day were detected.
  • Peak Times: Most drone flights were detected on Sundays, and between 19h and 21h.
  • Duration: The average drone flight lasted 3 minutes and 55 seconds.
  • Drone Model: The majority of detected flights were carried out with a DJI Mini.
  • Maximum Altitude: The highest recorded flight reached 1647 feet (500 meters) above ground level.
  • Pilot Distance: The furthest distance observed between a drone and its pilot was 21.031 meters.

This is SkeyDrone’s second public drone detection report, after the publication of the Brussels’ drone detection report in June 2024.

Hendrik-Jan Van Der Gucht, Managing Director at SkeyDrone, comments: “Our initial drone detection report generated significant interest. For our next report, we chose to focus on the Belgian coast due to its scenic beauty which may attract drone pilots wanting to capture stunning aerial footage. Additionally, the area presents numerous opportunities for drones for surveillance, monitoring and rescue operations. As we anticipate an exponential increase in drone traffic along the Belgian coast, it is crucial to be able to quantify and locate it effectively, especially given the presence of the Koksijde Air Base, the International Airport of Oostende and the helicopter training areas.”
